Expired BMW FSC? LIVE, EVO & WAY Fix

You bought a map update, plugged in the USB drive, and your iDrive says "Connect USB device with correct activation code." If your car has a LIVE, EVO or WAY navigation system, the cause is very often an expired FSC file.

The good news: it's a known issue, it works the same way on all three systems, and there are two permanent fixes. Here's what's going on and how to choose.

What is an FSC?

An FSC (activation code file) is the digital permission your car's navigation needs before it will accept map data. Think of it as a key to a lock: without a valid FSC, the map update can't install.

Why does an FSC expire?

LIVE, EVO and WAY vehicles only have three-year FSC files. They expire three years from the car's build date. The process and the fixes are essentially the same for all three, so everything below applies whichever one you have.

This is why a newer used car can have perfectly good hardware but an expired map code. It's also why many owners see an old map version (for example "2022-1") on a car that was supposed to get automatic updates.

Where to find the build date: commonly the driver's door-jamb sticker.

Your two options (LIVE, EVO and WAY)

To get the map to install, we either get a new FSC from BMW, or we bypass the FSC requirement.

Option 1: OEM FSC (comes directly from BMW)

  • The activation file comes directly from BMW and is created for your VIN.
  • One-time purchase. If you want to update your maps again later, you can use the same FSC file to install the new map data.
  • Delivery by USB drive shipped (a pre-paid return envelope is included) or download (the download and extraction usually takes two to four hours, up to six; you need a 64GB USB drive).
  • Special-order item, so it is not returnable.
  • Price: from $199.00.

→ OEM EVO/LIVE FSC Activation File + North America Navigation Map Update (the page covers LIVE, EVO and WAY map data)

Option 2: Non-OEM activation (our bypass)

  • Our aftermarket activation bypasses the "Connect USB device with correct activation code" message.
  • Our engineering team builds a custom program based on your VIN that performs the retrofit. You need a Windows PC and an ENET cable (the product page says about $13 on Amazon). The retrofit installs via ENET cable only.
  • It also enables Apple CarPlay on vehicles with the necessary hardware (and Sirius XM), and you still get updated native maps with OEM map data.
  • Custom product, so it is not returnable.
  • The page says it lasts forever unless the dealer updates your firmware (which is very rare).
  • Price: from $99.00.

→ Aftermarket EVO/WAY Activation FSC Retrofit (Navigation, Apple CarPlay, Sirius XM)

Good to know about both options

  • Both options last forever. After the first install you can install map updates the normal way.
  • Both require the map download (OEM map data on both). If you'd rather not download it, there's a $20 Shipped USB upgrade for the map data (see our Order Upgrades page).

Which one should I pick?

If you want… Choose
A code that comes straight from BMW, with plug-and-play USB OEM FSC
CarPlay and Sirius XM activated in the same step, and you have a Windows PC and ENET cable Non-OEM activation

What about BMW's over-the-air (OTA) map updates?

OTA map updates are region-based, usually just a few states, and typically only available for three years from the build date. They may be offered in your car's iDrive store. Our updates are national, covering all of North America including Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Already ordered the wrong thing?

It happens. A map order for a car with an expired FSC can't install until the FSC is sorted out. When we run your VIN and find an expired FSC, we email you the two options above, refund the order, and you place a new order with the right item. Questions? Contact us.

FAQ

What does "Connect USB device with correct activation code" mean?

Your navigation needs a valid FSC (activation file) before it will install the map. That message appears when the FSC is missing, doesn't match, or has expired.

Does an expired FSC affect LIVE, EVO and WAY cars?

Yes, all three. LIVE, EVO and WAY vehicles only have three-year FSC files, which expire three years from the build date, and the fixes are essentially the same for all three.

Once I fix the expired FSC, will I have to pay again for future map updates?

No for the activation. Both the OEM and non-OEM options last forever, so after the first install you install future map updates the normal way. (The map data itself is a separate update, or you can choose a 1-Year Subscription.)

Will my car get over-the-air map updates instead?

Possibly, but OTA updates are region-based (usually a few states) and typically only offered for three years from the build date. Ours are national for all of North America.

Does the non-OEM version give me CarPlay too?

Yes. The activation also enables Apple CarPlay on vehicles with the necessary hardware, along with Sirius XM, and you still get OEM map data.
